Photoshop Tutorial – Turning A Photo Into A Drawing

Daisy Fuentes Photoshop Drawing

This tutorial will show you how you can take one of your photos and turn it into a drawing. I have added a video that will show you how to achive this look along with some more modifying to jazz it up. Take a look and please post your comments.

So lets get started.

Daisy Fuentes

Right click and copy the photo above. Open up Photoshop and create a new document then hit OK. Photoshop will automatically insert the correct dimensions. Now paste the image on the canvas.

Next, create 2 duplicate layers from the original photo by right clicking on the layer and selecting duplicate. Do this twice so you will have three layers.

step-1.jpg

Now make sure the top layer is selected and change the blending mode to color dodge.

Color Dodge

After that, you will hit ctrl I to invert the image. So now you should have something like this.

Image after invert

Now on a good image, you will most likely not see any information after the invert but with this image you do. The spots that you see here will cause some problems but can be fixed and I will cover that in the second video of this tutorial.

Now we are half way there. Next, you will go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Depending on your image and the effect you are looking to achive, the amount of blur will vary. For this pic we will just use a radius of 2.2 then hit OK.

Image Blur

Now you should have something like this.

Image after blur

So all we have to do now is desaturate the image.

Look at the bottom of the layers pallet and you will see a half black and half white button called Fill/Adjustment Layer click that. Now you can just slide the saturation all the way to the left to achieve the grey scale look.

That’s it!

So I wnat you to succeed! thanks for making those. Susan

  2. Ronnie Jr,

  3. Hi! what happened with the follow up video to this???

  4. Hi, Same question, I have been trying to find the follow up video. Thanks

  5. It was several years ago when I made this tutorial. I didnt even touch the this site for the next couple years or so after I made it and got carried away with other jobs and projects. As soon as I find time in my chaotic schedule I will post a second part to this. I knew several people have been asking about this. So it is now on my list of things that need to be done.

  6. I’d like to see the follow up video as well. Also, is there a good layering blend mode that will bring out more details before or after the color desaturation?

    Thanks

  7. Good question! I havent tried any other blend modes. I may have to experiment with them and see what other effects I could come up with.

  8. Ronnie Jr,
Do you know how to clear the blue spot after we invert the image above ?
Cause when I try to clear with eraser, it didn’t work…
